Ranch Roping Overview

PRACTICE and demonstration sessions are geared toward the roping competition held in the afternoon. While the methods and procedures we follow are applicable and appropriate for use in the pasture, the practiced sessions are not ranch roping clinics.

Practice will consist of basic head shots including overhand, houlihan, and scoop loop; basic heel shots including basic trap, hip shots, back hand, etc., and discussion and demonstration of proper groundwork techniques. Emphasis on SAFETY of people, horses and cattle is stressed. The purpose is to help one another improve.

Roping Dummy practice, Breakaway honda with live cattle, Live ropes on live cattle will all be part of morning practice. Bring your breakaway hondas or knot-ropes. 60 ft. rope is recommended. Ropes, breakaways, and mulehide horn wrap may be available for sale. There may be some available to borrow for the day if needed.

RANCH ROPING COMPETITION This is a judged, rather than a timed, event. Teams will be determined by lot. There are three classes of competition. The Novice class will be 3 rounds followed by a final round for the top two teams. Scores will be recorded both as overall team placement, and also individual scores. The Open Class will be two rounds, and ropers will choose their own teams. In the second round, the calf must be tied down rather than stretched out. The Two-Man Reata Class is the most difficult and demanding class for both ropers and horses. There will be only one round of roping. Ropers will choose their partners and must use rawhide reatas for this class. At least one roper must have a horse that will properly work the rope after the rider has dismounted to do the groundwork on the calf.

This is “slick horn” roping- rubber on saddle horns is not allowed. We are trying to promote good horsemanship skills, therefore no tie-downs, martingales, or other head restricting devices are allowed. Proper working ranch attire, including hat, long-sleeve shirt, chaps or chinks, and boots, is required in arena. California-style gear is required. All judges’ decisions are final.
